Swimming cap, sleep mask, sewing kit:
the single-use classics

What every house keeps, what reception hands out

They are the items asked for at reception since hotels have existed: the swimming cap for the pool, the sleep mask for the guest from another time zone, the sewing kit for the button before the meeting. This guide describes which of them lie in the room, which reception gives, in which cases they come and how the inner pack belongs on the trolley.

LAY OUT OR HAND OUT

What lies in the room, what reception gives

The most expensive single-use item is the one cleared away unopened. The rule: lay out what almost everyone needs, hand out what every tenth guest needs.

Laying out

Shower cap and vanity kit in the bathroom, in the suite also the sleep mask on the pillow and the shoe shine sponge in the drawer. They are opened at almost every arrival, and what is open is replaced at the room change.

Handing out

Sewing kit, nail file, floss pick, toothpaste, swimming cap and umbrella. They lie at reception or on the housekeeping trolley and come on request. A house with 100 rooms hands out a few dozen sewing kits a month this way instead of clearing away a few hundred.

The sets for apartments

Serviced apartments need what a hotel room does not: the welcome dishwashing set with detergent, sponge and cloth and the cleaning set with all-purpose cleaner and dishwasher tab, both individually packed, for the first night until the first shopping.

CASE AND TROLLEY

From the case of 5,000 to the trolley of 100

The single-use classics come in the largest cases of the range. The trolley gets an inner pack, the store keeps the rest.

The calculation

Rooms times arrivals per month gives the arrivals. For items laid out that is the monthly need, divided by the pieces per case the cases per month. For items handed out the house counts with a tenth of the arrivals, which is enough in practice.

An example

A house with 120 rooms and ten arrivals per room and month has 1,200 arrivals. Shower caps: 1,200 a month, a case of 5,000 lasts four months. Vanity kits: 1,200 a month, a case of 2,500 two months. Sewing kits, handed out: around 120 a month, a case of 5,000 lasts three years, hence better the sewing kit in a paper sachet with 2,000 per case.

Storing

Dry, cool, in the closed case. Film and polyester tolerate years; toothpaste and shaving cream have a best-before date printed on the case, and they are ordered by the date, not by the price per case.

All single-use classics with picture, packaging and pieces per case are on the page Guest accessories for the hotel room.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the classics

What reception and executive housekeepers ask about swimming cap, sleep mask and sewing kit.

Swimming cap or shower cap, which goes where?+
The swimming cap is for the pool: plastic, striped, it sits tight and is required in many baths. The shower cap is the thin film cap for the shower in the room. Both individually wrapped, the swimming cap 1,000 to a case, the shower cap 5,000.
Why does the sleep mask not lie in every room?+
Because only some guests need it and an unopened mask is cleared away at the room change. In the suite it belongs on the pillow, otherwise at reception. Those who want it in every room take the cotton sleep mask in the paper sachet of the Green Elegant line.
What is in the vanity kit, and what in the vanity kit with hair tie?+
Two cotton pads, four cotton buds with paper stem and a nail file, individually wrapped, in cases of 2,500 or 5,000 without inner pack. The version with hair tie has the same contents plus a hair tie, for houses with many families and spa guests.
Sewing kit in a case of 5,000 or in a paper sachet of 2,000?+
For a house that hands out the sewing kit the large case is too big: at 120 kits a month it sits for three years. The sewing kit in a paper sachet with 2,000 per case fits better, and it comes without film.
How does housekeeping know when to reorder?+
By the inner pack. When the second-to-last bundle goes onto the trolley, the order is placed; for shower caps that is 100 pieces, for sleep masks 200, for sewing kits 1,000. Those who count the case as a whole in the store order too late.
